6. Properties:

Glutaraldehyde is a clear, colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a mildly irritating and characteristic odor. It is soluble in water, ether, ethanol, and other organic solvents. In aqueous solution, it exists mainly as various forms of hydrates—most of which are cyclic.

It is chemically active and tends to polymerize and oxidize. It reacts with compounds containing active oxygen or nitrogen. Its primary reaction with proteins involves the aldehyde group bonding with amino groups in the protein molecules, making it one of the best-known protein cross-linkers among aldehydes.

Glutaraldehyde demonstrates excellent antimicrobial activity. It has minimal effect on enzymatic activity and can be used to fix and cross-link most enzymes under controlled conditions without causing deactivation. Due to these advantageous characteristics, it has attracted considerable attention and is widely used.
